Did you know that in Alsace and Lorraine, this pastry, which you only find in pastry shop windows for Saint Nicholas Day, is called “Mannala” (in Alsatian Alemannic) or “Mannele” (in Lorraine Franconian)? Our German neighbors rather call it “Weckmann” or “Stutenkerl”, while in Italian-speaking Switzerland, our “Boxemännchen” is known as “Pupazzi di San Nicolao”.
Whatever the case, the “Boxemännchen” accompanies your breakfast, your children’s snack time and is there to satisfy your sweet cravings at any time of day.
